United Democratic Alliance (UDA's) Patrick Ole Ntutu was on Sunday night, August 14, declared the governor-elect for Narok county in a hotly contested battle.

Ntutu garnered 158,100 votes, followed by the Orange Democratic Movement's (ODM) Moitalel Kenta who scored 148,270.

The declaration was made at the National Tallying Centre at the Bomas of Kenya. The decision to shift the announcement to Bomas was made after a heated clash between rival supporters on Sunday, August 14.

Narok County Returning Officer, Sidney Namulungu, directed that the announcement would be shifted to avoid further clashes.

"Reference is made to Regulation 84 of the Elections (General) Regulations, 2012 on the tallying of the final result of an election. However, due to the breach of peace at the county tallying centre, it will be impossible to continue with the declaration of the county governor election result at the tallying centre.

"Owing to the foregoing, the proceedings at the IEBC Narok county tallying centre Maasai Mara University, are hereby moved to the national tallying centre at Bomas of Kenya, Nairobi for purposes of declaration of the county governor results on August 14," the IEBC officer stated.

On the other hand, Azimio's Ledama Ole Kina was re-elected as Narok Senator after garnering 135,180 votes, with his closest competitor, UDA's Samuel Tunai, trailing him with 117,869 votes.

Earlier, both Ntutu and Kenta's supporters crossed paths at the county tallying center with each of the teams claiming victory before the official announcement of the gubernatorial results by the electoral body.

This led to a security meeting convened by Narok County Commissioner, Isaac Masinde, in order to mitigate the security challenges.

Consequently, the two factions were banned from holding meetings in Narok town before the official announcement of the results.

Further, the police boss called upon the intervention of IEBC chairman, Wafula Chebukati, following the delays of the announcement.

"We have information that there is so much tension in the county because all want the certificate while the results have not been announced officially. I also appeal to Chebukati to take up the issue of counting votes so that we deal with this issue," Masinde stated.

Currently, UDA has 20 governors while the ODM party has 13. In terms of coalitions, the Kenya Kwanza coalition boasts of 22 governors while Azimio trails by one with 21.
