IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati was whisked away after chaos broke out at the Bomas of Kenya where he had gone to release the results of the presidential election.
Chebukati had arrived at the Bomas of Kenya even as four other commissioners conducted a parallel press conference at a hotel in Nairobi, to dispute the results.
At Bomas, a section of politicians blocked him from addressing the media. He was also assaulted before police intervened.
The anti-riot police officers formed a shield around him as gadgets and other equipment were thrown at him.
Chebukati was under pressure to expedite the tallying of presidential results within the seven-day timeline stipulated by the Constitution.
The country anxiously waited after the commission announced that the results would be released on Monday, August 15 at 4pm. However, the announcement was pushed to between 5pm and 6pm.
In the parallel press conference, Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, and three other commissioners, Francis Wanderi, Justus Nyangaya, and Irene Masit disowned the presidential results.
"We are not at the Bomas of Kenya because we cannot take ownership of the results that are going to be announced because of the opaque nature which these results have been handled," Cherera stated.
Azimio La Umoja chief agent Saitabao Kancory, had earlier alleged that they had evidence that IEBC's system was infiltrated by unidentified people.
"We have intelligence reports that the IEBC system was penetrated and hacked and that some of the IEBC officials had actually committed intellectual offences and some of them ought to be arrested," he stated but did not disclose their next move.
Meanwhile, DP William Ruto returned to the Bomas of Kenya as IEBC proceeded with its announcement.
