Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika on Wednesday, August 31, surprised a number of patients at Nakuru Level 5 Hospital with a gift worth Ksh5 million.
The Governor made a visit to the Hospital on a fact-finding mission when she realised that 64 patients had been detained due to unpaid bills.
After a meeting with the hospital's board, Kihika then directed that the medical bills of all the 64 patients be waived and their discharge facilitated.
She further promised to increase funding to the hospital to cater for the waived bills in her effort to keep the hospital's operations running.
“We will ensure no sharing of beds in all health facilities including maternity wings,” the newly sworn-in Governor noted during her address.
With her directive, the county's Department of Health facilitated the discharge of the patients who were aged between 7 years and 80 years.
During her address, Kihika further unveiled her plan to upgrade a sub-county hospitals to Level 5 standards to boost health delivery across the county.
She further directed that all bodies that had been detained at the mortuary be handed over to relatives for burial.
For now, top of her agenda is to facilitate the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) across the county to ensure that all residents are covered.
This forms part of her first executive order since she was sworn in as Nakuru Governor at the Nakuru ASK showground at August 25, 2022.
She took oath of office alongside her deputy David Kones after defeating Lee Kinyanjui during the August 9 General Election.
She is the County's third Governor and the first woman to occupy the seat.
