The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati has accused former Jubilee secretary general Raphael Tuju of character assassination over allegations that some commissioners attempted to auction votes to him.

Speaking during a post-election forum in Mombasa county on September 15, Chebukati stated that the said meeting Tuju was referring to was an act of kind benevolence by Commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu after the former CS was involved in a grisly accident.

He stated that the two commissioners went to visit Tuju at his home after receiving an invitation from the former Jubilee party official himself.

Chebukati added that at the meeting, Tuju tried to take advantage of their gesture and influence their role in the August 9 polls.

"Apart from the foregoing, the Chairman and Commissioners Prof. Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu were subjected to character assassination by Raphael Tuju who falsely tried to infer ill motive to a visit to him by the three of us when he was involved in a road gruesome road accident that nearly claimed his life.

"He attempted to take advantage of a benevolent gesture of visiting him in 2021, on his own invitation, while recuperating from his injuries to achieve the malicious end of maligning our image before the public," he stated.

Last month, Tuju had dared the two commissioners to disclose details of the 2021 meeting even as he stated that he was ready to provide CCTV footage to prove that the commissioners went to his home.

"I want Prof Guliye and Mr Molu to explain what they came to do in my house, what that discussion was about and the drift of that discussion was more of auctioneers rather than Commissioners.

"I want them to dispute that they did not come to my house. I will make available footage from CCTV cameras installed in my house to the DCI to aid investigations," he stated then.

The statements by Tuju came against the backdrop of affidavits by Guliye and Molu filed before the Supreme Court where they alleged that Tuju attempted to influence the outcome of the August 9 polls hours leading to the declaration of the president-elect.

In their affidavits, the two had alleged that Tuju promised IEBC commissioners rewards if they moderated the presidential results during a 4 am morning meeting on August 15.

Notably, Tuju refuted the claims of the two commissioners adding that he went to raise concerns to the commissioners regarding the verification of the presidential results.
