Truth Behind Davis Chirchir's Appointment as William Ruto's Chief of Staff

Speculations have been rife on former Energy Cabinet Minister Davis Chirchir's position as Chief of Staff in President William Ruto's office. 

Reports on his ascension to the powerful post created confusion about whether it was informal since the President, who is out of the country is yet to unveil his cabinet. 

Kenyans.co.ke has established that former Cabinet Minister Davis Chirchir currently holds the position. 

A source close to the presidency confided in Kenyans.co.ke that Chirchir assumed the role comprising directing, managing and overseeing all policy development, daily operations, and staff activities in the Office of the President.

A closer analysis of State House documents further indicated that the Head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua, referred to Chirchir as the Chief of Staff in a circular to outgoing Cabinet Secretaries. 

The announcement, however, is yet to be officially made

Chirchir was Ruto's Chief of Staff during his tenure as Kenya's deputy president.

Since 2013, the 61-year-old information technology (IT) expert has been a mainstay in the corridors of power oscillating between the State House and the Office of the DP.

He joined Cabinet in 2013 following his appointment as the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Energy and Petroleum.

He was, however, suspended in 2015 on recommendations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to pave way for investigations into abuse of office.

He was among the first casualties in President Uhuru Kenyatta's cabinet to face the axe.

In February 2022, Ruto tapped his prowess in governance matters by appointing him as his chief of staff in the run up to the August 9 polls.

Chirchir succeeded Ken Osinde who passed away in December 2021.

Earlier, an insider at State House told Kenyans.co.ke that Ruto's list of CS appointees was almost complete and would be unveiled upon his return from the US.

Former Citizen TV anchor Hussein Mohammed is said to be eyeing a ministerial position despite his name featuring among those likely to be appointed State House spokesperson. 

There are also reports that former Tharaka Nithi Senator, and Ruto's lawyer Kithure Kindiki, could be rewarded with the Interior docket.
