Uhuru Kenyatta has been missing in action as his opposition counterparts, Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka, keep President William Ruto in check.
From demanding that Ruto lowers food and fuel prices, conduct fresh nominations for Cabinet positions and reverse his decision to allow farmers to cultivate Genetically Modified Organism crops, Raila and Kalonzo intensified their campaigns.
As Raila addressed the Bunge La Wananchi at Jevanjee Gardens on Tuesday, October 11, then proceeded to walk along Muindi Mbingu street, Uhuru - who serves as the Azimio La Umoja council chairman - was nowhere to be seen.
In one of his last speeches as the head of state, Uhuru described Raila as 'Baba' and his President but is yet to be seen leading the opposition, which he argued he would be part of.
Uhuru made his first public appearance on October 7, weeks after handing over power to his successor President William Ruto.
In that period, the former head of state missed critical political and diplomatic meetings despite holding key positions in various institutions.
Raila's Thanksgiving Party
Uhuru was notably missing at the September 29 thanksgiving party hosted by the former Prime Minister to appreciate his campaign team's work in the August 9 polls.
While Raila did not comment on Uhuru's absence, sources close to the former head of state disclosed that he had just arrived from his vacation.
"Kenyatta skipped to avoid creating a perception that he is still in a campaign mood," one of Uhuru's confidants stated.
Azimio la Umoja PG
Despite serving as the Azimio council chairperson, the former president also skipped the coalition's two-day parliamentary group meeting held on September 16.
This was the first official meeting held by Azimio since Ruto's inauguration. The former president's Jubilee party was represented by Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni.
Notably, at the said meeting, Azimio nominated various legislators for the National Assembly leadership.
The Azimio PG was headed by Raila, his running mate Martha Karua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
South Africa Peace Talks
Upon his exit from office, Ruto appointed Uhuru to serve as a peace envoy. His main role was to oversee peace talks in Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) - processes he had initiated while in office.
The former President was scheduled to lead talks between warring factions in Ethiopia alongside other leaders such as former Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The duo were to lead the talks that were slated to be held in South Africa. However, Uhuru pulled out of the meeting at the last minute, citing other conflicting engagements.
His decision drew ire from Ruto's allies, who alleged that he was still loyal to Raila rather than the president who offered him the international role.
