Mathuki: EAC Boss Who Met Uhuru, Ruto Hours Apart

The East African Community - EAC Secretary General Peter Mathuki paid a courtesy call to President William Ruto on Wednesday, October 12 before proceeding to meet former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

During a meeting with the President, he briefed him on the EAC regional integration agenda, peace and security matters and key priority projects and programmes of the community.

Three hours later, Mathuki also met former President Kenyatta as an EAC facilitator on the peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Dr Peter Mathuki was appointed as East African Community Secretary General on April, 25, 2021.

Mathuki holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA), and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Strategic Management and Regional Integration from the University of Nairobi

From 2012 to June 2017, Mathuki was a member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), representing Kenya. 

While at EALA, he was the chairman of EALA's Committee on Legal Affairs and Good Governance. He was also a member of the Assembly's Committee on Trade and Investment.

Prior to his appointment to the EAC,  he was the Executive Director of the East African Business Council (EABC), the region's highest body of Private Sector associations and corporate in East Africa where he served from 2018  to 2021.

In his capacity as the Executive Director of the EABC, Mathuki was actively involved in the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and was part of the efforts to establish the African Business Council (AfBC), "an independent private sector institution of the African Union".

He also sits on the boards of Kenya Investment Authority, based in Nairobi and the Inter-University Council for East Africa, based in Kampala. He is also a member of the Kenya Institute of Management.

Further, has also served as Director in charge of International Labour Standards (ILO) at the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU-Africa) which later became (ITUC-Africa). 

Additionally, Dr Mathuki worked for European Union (EU) programs on institutional strengthening for Africa based in several African countries.
