Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were on Saturday, October 22, puzzled by a 23-year-old youth who manufactured a gun from scratch.

In a statement, the authorities noted that the gun was capable of firing and had a live bullet by the time they nabbed the youth, John Kimani Muchina.

Built to mimic the slick design of a typical pistol, the homemade gun was made out of everyday metals and has a rusted exterior.

The police nabbed Muchina after getting a tip-off from the public regarding questionable business that happens inside his house in Kayole.

The team then raided the house at around 11am.

"His apprehension materialized after police officers got wind of a man acting suspiciously. It was while on their usual patrol within Kayole's Maana area that the Njiiru-based officers received information regarding a house frequented by suspicious characters. In the dramatic 11am incident, the sleuths immediately swung into action and raided the house, busting the suspect off guard.

"John Kimani Muchina, 23, was apprehended and a quick but detailed search conducted in the premises," read the statement in part.

The homemade gun was recovered alongside a motorcycle make boxer, six pocket phones, vehicle and motorcycle ignition keys.

Other stolen property founder were an insurance certificate sticker, mobile phone accessories, five empty wallets, a gas mask and three waist porches.

Muchina was taken into police custody awaiting his arraignment in court on Monday, October 24.

In July 2021, another Kenyan was arrested in Homa Bay County for producing homemade fire arms which included pistols and a G3 rifle.

Solomon Otieno Ojwang', 32, was arrested in a joint operation carried out by officers from Sori police post and Assistant chief's office of Kasewe B Sub-location.

The guns included two pistols and another one resembling a G3-rifle. Additionally, three live rounds of ammunition were at the scene.
