Nairobi Railway City is an iconic multi-modal urban development conceived during former President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration.
Through a Public Private Partnership (PPP), the UK government was expected to fund the project at an estimated cost of Ksh30 billion.
The site map is situated within 425 acres between Haile Sellasie Avenue, Uhuru Highway, Landhies Road and Bunyala Road.
"Its strategic location positions it perfectly to be an iconic nerve Centre for the Nairobi Multimodal Transport System with a world-class new Central Railway Station incorporating mixed use commercial developments, hotels and intermodal facilities," Kenya Railways statement read in part.
Central Business District (CBD) Transformation Plan
Nairobi Railway City is touted to expand the CBD to the South by setting up key services and facilities to attract entrepreneurs.
The surrounding areas within the Nairobi Central Railway Station are also set to undergo a massive facelift.
Areas around the station include the vast Landis area, areas around the farmers' market and the Muthurwa area.
Already those who had encroached on Kenya Railway's plots around that area were evicted to pave the way for the rehabilitation plan.
The project is also poised to provide a serene environment favouring residents living in the area and further provide sustainable urban space for traders within CBD.
According to Kenya Railways, the project is also projected to position Nairobi as a leading world city.
Transport experts also indicated that the transport hub with multi-modal facilities and create a transit-oriented development (ToD) to support ridership for the Nairobi Commuter Rail.
"The station form is inspired by the Boma – a circular community enclosure rooted in the heritage of Kenya and broader African culture," the firm which won the construction details stated.
During the upgrade, Kenya Railways also intends to purchase more locomotives and also improve the network by revamping its parking system, automating ticketing and fitting the area with CCTV cameras.
"The Nairobi Commuter Railway service is envisaged to improve the level of service of the commuter passengers, increase safety of operations and reduce the transit time of the trains," Nairobi Railway stated.
