Sarah Kimani Quits Newsroom After 20 Years

Veteran journalist Sarah Kimani announced her departure from the newsroom after a stellar career spanning 20 years.

On Wednesday, November 2, Kimani penned an emotional letter recounting her journey in the media profession which began at the Nation Media Group (NMG).

She paid a special tribute to colleagues in the industry and the audience with whom she built a connection during the years she graced the TV screens.

"In these 20 years, I have stood on the shoulders of giants both at home and abroad. Some I have met, and some I just wanted to be so much like them.

"I also have had a great audience, supportive but also very knowledgeable so there was no room for mediocrity," Kimani wrote.

However, she noted that she would be telling stories and would pursue a new niche of reporting. The media maestro reassured her followers that her presence would still be felt though on social media.

"I will continue to be a journalist only this time focusing more on human rights. I will also continue to throw in our usual Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) jokes," Kimani wrote.

According to her resume, the multi-media journalist began her career as a news reporter at the NMG in July 2001. She spent five years, including a spell at NTV Uganda.

Kimani was promoted to Features Editor before she moved to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) as the East African Correspondent.

She recently landed a job at Amnesty International as a media manager, to lead the Media desk in the East Africa and Great Lakes region.

A product of the popular Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC), Kimani holds a Master's Degree in Communication and Media Studies from the University of Leicester.

During her career, she won several awards including UNAIDS Kenya Journalist of the Year (2007), CNN African Journalist of the Year-Environment category and the Peter Jenkons environment award in 2005. 

In 2004, CNN named her the African Journalist of the Year -Education category. Some of her award-winning features include covering wanton logging in the Mau forest and HIV/Aids in Kenya.
