Police in Narok North Sub County launched an investigation into an incident where members of the public assaulted a mentally retarded woman accused of child trafficking.
Narok Central Police commander, Fredrik Shiundu, on Thursday, November 3, stated that police rescued the lady and rushed her to the hospital after being alerted of the situation.
“We received a report that there was a woman who was being beaten for an accusation of stealing children.
"Doctors informed us that the lady is mentally retarded," Shiundu stated.
The police boss added that the police also de-escalated the situation as investigations into the case commenced.
"She was badly injured, and that's why I am urging the public not to take the law into their hands.
"Let anyone who is aggrieved file complaints at nearby police station. No citizen has the right to take the law into their own hands," he added.
Police are yet to arrest and grill suspects in the case.
Child abduction cases have been on the rise. However, some incidents were cases of mistaken identities.
On June 26, 2021, a similar scenario happened at Zimmerman after two men were mistaken for child kidnappers.
The mob rained blows on the duo and even threatened to burn their car. Police intervened and rescued the two from death.
Kasarani OCPD Peter Mwanzo ascertained that the incident was a case of mistaken identity and warned the public against mob justice.
Meanwhile, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has constantly condemned the kidnapping and murder of children in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya.
“UNICEF condemns in the strongest possible terms the kidnapping and killing of children. This is one of the worst crimes imaginable, and there can be no excuses for it.
"As well as holding the perpetrators to account, we need to redouble our efforts to ensure that children are protected wherever they are; at home, in schools and in public spaces,” UNICEF stated in July 2021.
