Nakuru county Governor Susan Kihika on Monday evening, November 7, fulfilled her promises to Joyce Chepng'etich, the mother whose children fed on chameleons at Molo Sub county.
According to the photos as seen exclusively by Kenyans.co.ke the mother was seen arriving to her new home after the two children were discharged from the hospital.
The county's deputy director of communications Kigotho Mwangi Kigotho had confirmed that the governor was moved by the woman's plight.
“The mother to the two kids will be employed in the county at the environmental department. She will get a new house in the same locality and new bedding since her family never had any of this in their previous house.
The governor promised to pay three months rent in her new house, take the children back to school and provide food for the first three months," he explained.
Mwangi, who spoke while with the family at the hospital where the kids are still receiving their treatment added that the children will get free follow-up checkups from Nakuru Specialist hospital.
Later in the evening, Mwangi confirmed through photos that Chepng'etich's children had been discharged from the hospital.
The family also recived everything promised to them by the governor. Neighbors welcomed the family joyously as they helped them move to their new house.
The two children, aged 4 and 2, were rushed to the hospital by their mother, Joyce Chemng'etich, who found them unconscious after she returned home from work.
She became suspicious of the situation after discovering two heads of chameleons in a sufuria.
Chemng’etich reported that her seven-year-old son opted to cook the reptiles to add to the few potatoes they had for food.
"When I asked him why he had prepared chameleons for his siblings, he told me it was because of hunger," Chemng'etich stated.
Kenya is grappling with an unprecedented drought and hunger situation, with nearly 12 counties across the country affected.
A recent report indicated that families in Gatundu south, Kiambu county have been intoxicating their children to keep them in bed for a long time due to lack of food.
A village elder revealed that many children have not been attending school due to the biting hunger, with many families struggling to put food on the table.
“This is a very disturbing situation, and we need urgent intervention to improve the situation before we lose a generation just because we struggle to put food on the table,” reported the village elder Peter Weru Kimani.
President William Ruto, on Saturday, November 5, led the government in flagging off relief foods to the affected counties.
