President William Ruto on Thursday, November 10, revealed his administration’s plan to manufacture affordable smartphones in Kenya.
Ruto, while addressing the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KNCCI) annual general meeting at PCEA St Andrew’s in Nairobi noted that he was in talks with local telcos to deliberate on a roadmap to realizing the goal.
The move, according to the President, would help to make smartphones affordable and available for micro small andmedium enterprise traders (MSMEs).
"The real last mile in technology is the gadgets and we are working with our telcos so that we can have a smartphone that is below ksh5,000," the President stated.
"In the next 8 to12 months, we will have the cheapest smartphone in Africa manufactured in Kenya."
Ruto stated that his government is committed to enhancing network connectivity in a bid to scale up e-commerce and create employment in the country.
He reaffirmed his dedication to implementing the 'digital Super Highway' plan aimed at connecting all parts of Kenya to the internet.
In addition, the Head of State revealed plans to digitize government all services in the country.
"I am very confident that employment is going to be ready and available if we can ensure that spread technology and have financing," he stated.
Ruto urged the KNCCI to continue with their efforts of supporting innovation and investment by offering counsel and mentorship.
He cited the example of his flagship agenda of the 'Hutlser's Fund' as a step towards the right direction in supporting MSMEs in the country.
"I challenge our financial institutions to be flexible in how they lend their finances and consider the aspect of cost. It is time we inspire our MSMEs by ensuring they have access to affordable credit," he stated.
