Kenyan mortuary attendants now want the Kenyan government to recognize them as medical practitioners.
On Friday, November 11, the morticians were adamant that they would not relent until the government recognized and awarded them benefits enjoyed by other medics.
“We are saying that morticians need more support, recognition and above all to be having a skill that will be recognized as a cadre,” the association of morticians explained through a statement.
“With entry points and scheme of service, morticians will at least feel as part of the medical community,” they added.
The statement was made during the first-ever mortician conference, which discussed issues and common challenges affecting morticians across the country.
Morticians vowed to continue to lobby the government to enact a scheme of service.
They also formed the Morticians and Allied Professionals Association of Kenya to push for their rights and recognition.
“Morticians play a major role, that particular day when life ends, and they deserve social protection and recognition,” they stressed.
The 1st annual general meeting was held at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu.
Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Ochieng Owili, who graced the event thanked morticians for the crucial role they play in the society.
Should their cries be heard, the morticians will be incorporated into county governments' payroll as health is a devolved unit.
They will also access employment benefits like allowances, annual leave and pension schemes.
