Police officers at the Narok Town Police Station sacrificed their daily lunch to buy food for afflicted families struggling with hunger.

Narok Central Sub County Police Commander Frederick Shiundu disclosed that the officers donated bags of maize and beans, cooking oil, sugar, rice and maize flour.

On Friday, November 11, at the police station, Shiundu handed the food to the Red Cross Society for distribution, pointing out that the police were not as heartless as perceived.

"We are not ignorant to happenings around the country, and are aware that there are families that are starving because of the drought, our gesture is one that comes from a place of love," he kindly proclaimed.

Present at the handover was Narok Red Cross Society coordinator, Sylestine Ogutu, who lauded the police for their philanthropic acts.

Ogutu made a clarion call to all residents to share the little they had at their offices for distribution.

In November 2022,  Homa Bay and Siaya counties joined the long list of counties ravaged by hunger.

31 out of 47 counties are deeply affected by the stinging crisis in the country.

With the pain of the prolonged drought biting hard, the government rolled out measures to cushion the country - from offering relief food to lowering the cost of fertiliser from Ksh6,500 to Ksh3,500.

President William Ruto also wooed investors to build fertiliser manufacturing companies in the country, but reiterated the need to shift from rainfed production to irrigation.

"As of Thursday, November 10, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) indicated a rise of hungry Kenyans from 4.35 to 5.1 million, which means that the situation is bad,” Kenya Red Cross secretary general, Asha Mohamed announced.

The recent relief drive launched by the government saw thousands of locals lining up in various counties to receive food aid.

Opposition leader, Raila Odinga, urged the government to develop more structures to save the nation from drought and hunger.
