Uganda's opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, recalled the experience of observing elections in Kenya.

Appearing on Tonight show on Citizen TV on Thursday, November 17, the musician stated that he was fascinated by the freedoms Kenyans enjoy, among them being an interrupted internet connection.

He was also equally amazed by how Kenya's election was conducted without hiccups.

"I was astonished after arriving at the airport before the election day, and the internet was still on and it continued to be on during the election.

"I did not see anyone being abducted anywhere or military everywhere, and I did not see the opponents of the incumbent under house arrest," Bobi Wine told Citizen TV anchor, Waihiga Mwaura.

The politician added that Ugandans were envious of Kenya's democracy, as imperfect as it seemed.

"But again, democracy is always just a step away from extinction, so you must guard it jealously, " he added.

Wine further warned Kenyans against entertaining any traits of dictatorship from their leaders. He argued that Kenyans were lucky to enjoy a transition of power, unlike Uganda, which has had one president, General Yoweri Museveni, for 36 years.

"I told you to guard your constitution before it's too weak to guide you. Constitutions are supposed to be bigger than leaders and presidents.

"You have had the privilege of watching one leader peacefully hand over power to another leader. You don't want to lose that," the opposition leader remarked.

Wine first sounded his warning in early November 2022, after Fafi MP, Salah Yakub, proposed amending the Constitution to replace presidential term limits with an age cap of 75 years.

President William Ruto, however, dismissed the plot and urged MPs to focus on serving the nation.

“Do not spend your time pushing for selfish and self-serving legislation, like changing the Constitution to remove term limits. My focus is service to the people,” Ruto told the MPs.

Bobi Wine and former opposition leader Kizza Besigye were in Kenya for a human rights forum organized by Uganda's opposition leaders.
