The National Transport and Security Authority (NTSA) received a shot in the arm for its ongoing project after it leased 18 brand-new cars.
A source from the authority exclusively confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke on Friday, November 18, that the fleet would be used to boost the ongoing road safety campaign titled 'Usalama Barabarani.'
The project is aimed at reducing road carnage across the country.
NTSA's new vehicles were acquired through a Government lease programme, with more automobiles expected to join the fleet in the future.
"As part of measures to reduce road traffic fatalities and injuries across the country, NTSA has received 18 motor vehicles under the Government lease programme to boost its Usalama Barabarani campaign.
"NTSA is expected to acquire more vehicles in the coming months to enhance road safety education and awareness," stated our source.
The cars are of Volkswagen make and sport a shiny black exterior emblazoned with a Chrome Yellow branding of the campaign.
The campaign aims to boost safe driving after the authority painted a grim picture on the Kenyan road after the 2022 road crash victims surpassed those of 2021.
According to the latest figures, the total number of victims of road accidents from January to October 30, 2022, increased to 17,550 from 16,642 in 2021.
Deaths alone increased from 3,733 to 3,924, while those who sustained serious injuries increased from 8,214 cases to 7,982.
The most affected categories were pedestrians, who accounted for 1,413 deaths, followed by motorcyclists at 1,046, passengers (693) and pillion passengers (363).
As a result, the authority will mark 2022's World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday, November 20, by holding commemorative activities in various counties.
