Several vehicles were involved in a multiple-car crash after a BMW driver lost control in Lela along Kisumu and Ahero highway on Sunday, December 18 morning.
The motorist reportedly hit a trailer on the busy road and swerved off the highway, forcing other drivers to ram into the BMW.
One of the vehicles involved in the accident was pushed into a drainage system along the road, with its body seriously damaged.
The photos shared online showed the BMW's bonnet and front wheels were missing due to the accident's impact.
Area residents crowded the area to help in the rescue operations as officials arrived to assess the situation.
According to multiple reports, those critically injured in the accident were rushed to nearby hospitals. It was, however, not yet ascertained whether any fatalities were recorded.
The accident came days after a trailer rammed into two Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) on the Nakuru Eldoret Highway on Tuesday, December 13.
Nakuru West Sub-county Police Commander Edwin Otieno confirmed that at least eight people died in the accident.
Following the incident, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen introduced immediate road changes on all roads.
He directed the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to implement safety measures to forestall accidents, especially during the festive season.
"KeNHA will erect signs that direct motorists to observe the 50 kilometres per hour speed limit on the Nakuru-Salgaa Road as well as instruct motorists to observe lane discipline," Murkomen declared.
According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), road accidents killed more people between January 2022 and October 2022 than in 2021 over the same period.
In 2021, 16,6452 fatalities were recorded compared to 17,550 recorded in 2022.
