"Murara Alphonse, a Rwandan driver of the volcano bus, and Omido David, a Kenyan and the driver of the Oxygen bus both died on the spot," the statement read in part.

Modern Coast confirmed that the bus was part of its flight and distanced itself from any blame in the accident.

"Today morning our bus destined for Kampala from Kigali was involved in an accident with a Volcano bus. Confirmed reports indicate reckless driving by the Volcano bus driver,

"As investigations continue we wish a quick recovery to those affected and undergoing treatment and condole with the families whose loved ones succumbed to injuries," the bus company wrote.

Three Rwandese nationals including conductors of both vehicles and a passenger, and a woman identified as a Burundian national also perished in the road carnage.

The bodies of the deceased were ferried to the Kabale Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary where postmortems will be conducted.

Ugandan police attributed the accident to reckless driving on the part of the Volcano bus driver.

"The driver of Volcano bus, eyewitnesses say, was driving in the on-coming lane when he collided with the Oxygen bus. The driver tried to swerve to the left to dodge the bus in vain," they explained.

Area police commander Ibrahim Saiga claimed that the drivers' visibility was also undermined by the foggy weather conditions experienced in the morning.

Meanwhile, 40 passengers aboard the two buses were rushed to the Lotom Health Centre in Muhanga where they are currently receiving treatment.

The incident comes three years after a Modern Coast bus was involved in a grisly accident along the Iganga-Bugiri highway in Uganda.

According to local media outlets, the bus collided with a trailer leaving eight dead and several others injured.
