Kenyans will enjoy stabilised electricity supply if KenGen follows through with its plan to increase its production capacity.
In a statement dated Thursday, January 5, the government enterprise announced that it will add an additional 3000 Megawatts to the national grid in a new corporate strategy.
The increased supply is expected to boost the power supply for people living in Kenya at a time when the government removed electricity subsidies sparking fears of increased token prices.
“Our focus going forward is to secure the baseload capacity to stabilise Kenya’s energy supply mainly from green renewable energy,” KenGen revealed.
The stabilisation of the power supply will curb shortages and blackouts experienced in many parts of the country as well as lower electricity costs.
Nyanza and Western regions are some of the areas expected to experience less rationing following the increased supply.
“Gogo Hydropower will be rehabilitated to produce 8MW from the current 2MW.
“The increased supply will be utilized in the region and its environs making sure residents enjoy uninterrupted power supply,” KenGen announced.
Nationally, the country will benefit from increased commercial drilling projects in Ethiopia and Djibouti as well as rehabilitation of Olkaria and Eburru geothermal projects.
KenGen statement came after President William Ruto assured Kenyans that his government did not intend to increase electricity charges.
“There are rumors being spread by people that electricity costs will go up.
“I assure everyone that there will be no additional charges today or going into the future,” the President promised Kenyans on January 1, 2023.
