A civil engineering company known as Malava Construction Tuesday, January 10, extracted a machine gun that its workers accidentally stumbled upon at a Construction site in Gigiri.

The construction company filed the matter at Gigiri Police Station noting that the weapon was kept hidden buried in a plot of land on which they were working.

"While excavating at construction plot number 214/263 belonging to Neer Chandaria D Ahashon located along Twiga road one worker identified as Maithya discovered a metal covered in a polythene bag," a police report read in part.

Responding to the report, police officers attached to Gigiri Police Station rushed to the scene and collected the firearm.

Gigiri Police officers confirmed that the gun was collected as evidence and will be used during investigations. The machine gun was loaded with nineteen rounds of ammunition in the bag.

Following the recovery of the machine gun, the construction site was temporarily cordoned off as a crime scene.

The first step in the investigation involved ballistic processes and procedures that were meant to establish the origin of the firearm.

The machine was sent to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) laboratoryto establish its ownership.

DCI officers were scheduled to question the owner of the plot of land, the people who recovered the weapon, and any potential suspects.

Investigators at the DCI headquarters also talked to officers from Gigiri Police Station to understand the state in which the gun was found.

It is after the conclusion of investigations that police officers will make arrests and press charges accordingly.

Construction workers working with Malava Construction were excavating a plot when they came across a polythene bag with something that looked like metal wrapped inside.

The investigation will be done in collaboration with other squads and units at the DCI headquarters
