List of 5 NSSF Benefits & How to Claim Them

The National Social and Security Fund (NSSF) on Wednesday, January 11, announced different grants and benefits available to Kenyans.

The government agency further detailed how Kenyans can claim those benefits.

The following benefits are available according to the fund, which offers social protection to all Kenyan workers.

Age/Retirement Benefit

This benefit is available to Kenyans who have attained the age of 55 years.

You can also benefit from the funds if you have formally retired from regular employment.

If you meet the above criteria, you are advised to visit any NSSF office with the following documents; A certified copy of your retirement letter or certificate of service or termination letter, NSSF membership card, National Identity card, and your bank details.

Withdrawal Benefit

This benefit is for members who are at least 50 years of age and have retired from regular salaried employment.

For withdrawal benefits, NSSF requires the same set of documents as in retirement benefits claims.

Survivors Benefit

NSSF pays survivors benefits to dependents/relatives of a deceased member.

The dependants qualify for this benefit in the following order:

  1. The husband/wife of the deceased member.
  2. All children irrespective of age or gender (if the husband/wife of the deceased member is also deceased, or if the deceased member was a single parent).
  3. The parents of the deceased (if the deceased member was not married and had no children)
  4. Sisters/brothers of the deceased (if the deceased was single, had no children, and both parents are deceased)
  5. The guardian to the children of the deceased member (where both the parents are deceased and all the deceased members’ children are minors)
  6. An applicant who has letters of administration (where all dependants are exhausted)

If you qualify in any of the above, you are required to visit NSSF office with the following documents; original death certificate of the member, photocopy of the deceased member Identity Card (ID) if available, claimant’s original ID card, letter from County Administration confirming dependants and NSSF number of the deceased member.

Invalidity Benefit

This benefit is available to members who are certified to be permanently incapable of working because of physical or mental disability.

Members who are at least 50 years of age and suffer from a partial incapacity of a permanent nature that prevents them from undertaking employment can also apply for this benefit.

You must visit NSSF office with the same documents as in the retirement claim with the addition of a medical/treatment report from the hospital you attended.

Emigration Benefit

This is available to NSSF registered members moving from Kenya to a country that is not a member of the East African Community, without the intention of returning to reside in Kenya.

If you are emigrating from the country, you should visit NSSF offices with the following documents; NSSF membership card, National ID card/ Valid Passport/ Alien ID card, a certified copy of your retirement letter or certificate of service or termination letter, evidence of country of migration-VISA (outside East African Community), sworn affidavit declaring permanent immigration (for Kenyan Citizens), your bank details and traveling ticket.
