Two electrical engineering first-year students from Strathmore University have invented a unique CCTV camera.

The students, Keith Brian 18 and Maxwell Okoth 19 started working on the unique CCTV in 2020.

The innovation is a smart security system that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect security threats in buildings.

On how it functions, the system has a visual learning software that collects data on human behavior to help prevent burglary before it happens.

When the system detects an anomaly in human behavior, it sends live footage from the CCTV to the house's owner through a virtually linked App.

This is different from other CCTV cameras which can only be used to review a crime scene after the robbery.

On why they decided to develop the unique system, the duo revealed in a past interview that it was borne out of real-life situations.

“We saw that burglary was happening a lot in Kenya prompting us to find a solution.

“Since the system preempts an attack, it will help curb crime by reducing response during the attacks,” Keith explained.

The two students have earned international recognition due to their innovation.

In 2020, while in form three, the duo won the prestigious Young Scientist Kenya award.

They were also nominated in 2023 to participate in the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in Dublin, Ireland.
