Ugandan High Commissioner to Kenya Dies in Nairobi

Uganda's High Commissioner to Kenya and Seychelles Hassan Wasswa Galiwango died on Monday, January 16 at a hospital in Nairobi. 

Rebecca Kadaga, Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister, confirmed the death of the high commissioner on Monday.

The commissioner had been admitted to the hospital in Nairobi and had been undergoing treatment for a period of time.

"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Honorable Galiwango, High Commissioner of Uganda to Kenya, which occurred this morning," Kadaga stated.

Kenya's Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua also mourned the late diplomat.

"My condolences to the President, Government and the people of Uganda on the passing of Ugandan High Commissioner to Kenya, Dr. Hassan Wasswa Galiwango, who passed away this morning in Nairobi Hospital. My deepest sympathies to his family. Rest in peace brother," read Mutua's statement.

Galiwango was appointed High Commissioner in October 2020 to replace Phibby Otaala, who had left office to contest for a political seat back home.

Before his appointment as High Commissioner, Galiwango had been a long-serving director of finance and administration at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) secretariat.

Galiwango was the husband to a Ugandan Member of Parliament, Connie Nakayeze Galiwango.

“My Sincere condolences to you my sister Hon.Connie Galiwango and the family upon the demise of Ambassador Dr. Hassan Galiwango,” speaker of the Ugandan Parliament Anita Among stated on Twitter.

Ugandans eulogised the commissioner as a  committed officer who worked hard to ensure the welfare and rights of Ugandans in Kenya were upheld.

 “I wish to express my deepest sympathies to Honorable Museveni and the people of Uganda upon the painful demise of Hassan Galiwango, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Kenya, we are deeply saddened,” a user stated on Twitter.

“We shall always remember his dedicated service to his country,” another user added.
