A logbook is one of the most important documents for car owners as it proves ownership of a vehicle.

They are also important because they can be presented as collateral when taking loans and must be transferred when selling a car.

However, it is not uncommon for car owners to lose their logbooks or damage them in one way or the other.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) provides a mechanism for replacing a log book.

It is important to note that the process is done online through the NTSA TIMS citizen self-service portal.

The first step to take after losing a logbook is to report the matter to the police.

Obtain a tape-lifting report from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), issued after the authorities verify that the details of the vehicle’s chassis and engine numbers match the information provided in the registration documents.

Log into the NTSA TIMS portal through tims(dot)ntsa(dot)go(dot)ke.

Under vehicle registration, Select Apply For Duplicate Logbook and Create New.

Select Apply Against Lost Logbook and fill in the required information on the drop-down form displayed, including the reason for application of duplicate logbook, notification methods, and the collection office.

Proceed to upload the police abstract and the DCI tape lifting report earlier issued after filling in the form.

The portal will then prompt you to pay Ksh2,500 through your preferred method.

If successful, you will receive a notification via SMS or email after 10 to 14 working days. Alternatively, one can check the TIMS portal for feedback
