A form one student at Chemase Secondary School in Nandi County died on Friday, March 3, while undergoing treatment after he was beaten by two teachers for cheating in a physics exam.

According to the student’s mother, she was summoned by the school administration to the Chepsese Health Centre and notified that her son had collapsed in the school’s staffroom while being punished by two male teachers

She detailed that her son vomited blood and complained of internal stomach injuries after the punishment which included 16 strokes of the cane and kicks.

The student was later referred to Nandi Hills Sub-County Hospital from Chepsese Health Centre after complaining of chest pains.

Tinderet OCPD Mohammed Jire confirmed the incident stating that officers had already started probing the circumstances that led to the death of the student who had been admitted to the institution two weeks earlier.

"The school management didn't receive any report of sickness from the boy but learnt later that he had developed complications.

"We will look into every allegation to establish the truth about the unfortunate incident and take appropriate action," Jire stated.

The student had reported to the school late because his family did not have enough funds to necessitate his high school education

The school had since been closed indefinitely after students in the institution held protests on Sunday, March 5,  demanding answers on what led to the death of Kiptanui.

The deceased body was taken to Nandi-Hills hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination on the circumstances in which he died.

The OCPD further asked the family of the deceased and the members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigations to be done.

"If the post-mortem reveals the cause of death to be the beating from the said teachers, then we shall prosecute them for murder," Jire noted.
