Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Monday, March 6, failed to present himself at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road again.
While speaking to the media, DCI officers privy to the matter revealed that they were not expecting the former CS to avail himself at their offices.
In addition, Matiang'i's lawyer referenced a statement dated March 1, 2023, which indicated that the right channel was not followed in instructing Matiang'i to appear at the DCI offices.
"He is not aware of any investigations on him but reckons that constitutional office are at liberty to discharge their mandate; and that he, too, has the right to follow due process as a citizen of this country," the statement read in part.
A spot check by Kenyans.co.ke revealed that normal operations were ongoing at the DCI headquarters whereby a section of Kenyans queued for a Good Conduct certificate among other services.
Efforts to reach Matiang'i's lawyer, Danstan Omari, were futile as he did not respond to calls and text messages.
The former CS flew back to the country on Saturday night, March 4, following a two-week trip to the United Kingdom to attend to family matters.
The sudden departure was, however, criticised by the Kenya Kwanza administration which cast aspersions on Matiang'i's motive to leave the country at a time when he was summoned to appear before DCI detectives.
During a recent rally, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claimed that he flew to the UK so as not to answer the police regarding his alleged home raid.
He was called to record a simple statement but he decided to flee. Didn't I tell you that these people were cowards?
"They came after us before the elections, but did we run? They arrested me and took away our property and we stayed put," the DP stated.
Omari, however, disputed the allegations and noted that his travel was part of his regular travels and did not have a sinister motive. He also noted that his client formally notified security sector and diplomatic officials about his trip.
