Raila Odinga Campaign Secretariat Spokesperson Makau Mutua distanced himself from a letter purported to be calling for the support of the LGBTQ community.

Speaking to a Kenyans.co.ke on Monday, March 6, Prof Mutua denied authoring the letter bearing the Azimio logo, a negation of Odinga's earlier position on the matter.

"The letter is fake and was doctored to create an impression that it came from me but is is not," he stated.

In addition, he gave his position on the matter but maintained that it was his personal position and not that of the Azmio coalition party.

"I do not know what Raila said but personally, I do not believe that anyone should be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation," Mutua stated.

The fake document claimed that Azimio purportedly admitted to being part of the LGBTQ community and condemned the attacks on the Supreme Court over the ruling it made allowing them to register associations.

"We have always supported the LGBTQ community. In fact, some of our members, including some senior members of Azimio Coalition party, are proud members of the community," the fake letter read in part.

The doctored document further protested the alleged exclusion and discrimination of members of the community whom they argued were also Kenyans.

Mutua explained that the letter was part of propaganda aimed at denting Azimio and asked members of the public to ignore it and only rely on official communication channels.

On March 2, Raila faulted the apex court stating that the ruling was in violation of  Article 45 of the Constitution which provides that every Kenyan had a right to marry and get married to individuals of the opposite gender.

He condemned the court for overstepping its mandate by resorting to formulating laws, which was the role of the Parliament.

President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua also differed with the Supreme Court over the verdict.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court published its full judgement in a 43-page document revealing that two judges dissented from the ruling.
