Four people on Wednesday, March 15, lost their lives in Kianugu along the Nairobi-Naivasha highway in a multiple-car crash involving five vehicles.

Gilgil police commander Francis Tumbo confirmed the fatalities, stating the accident was caused by a truck driver who failed to maintain lane discipline.

The lorry rammed into the driver's side of a matatu on the oncoming lane, causing it to veer off the road.

"The driver was overtaking on the climbing lane when it collided with the matatu. Two other vehicles crashed into others in an attempt to evade the accident," Tumbo stated

A video clip of the accident revealed that the matatu was completely damaged on the right side with the luggage on the boot sprawled on the road.

A second matatu in tow of the first rammed into it from behind while a trailer that lost control was parked across a section of the highway.

In addition, a body was seen lying on the tarmac. Tumbo confirmed that 15 people sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities to receive medical attention.

The accident caused a traffic snarl-up along the highway, as a team of emergency service providers helped survivors to safety.

Police officers are seeking to record a statement from the driver as part of the investigations to establish the cause of the accident. The lorry and two matatus were towed to Gilgil Police station.

In a separate accident, a pedestrian died after a pedestrian died on the spot after being hit by a 67-seater bus which lost control at the Ngata blackspot.

The body was ferried to the Ngata Hospital mortuary awaiting identification by family members and a conclusive post-mortem report.

Tumbo cautioned motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads with the onset of the rainy season, with poor visibility listed among the leading causes of accidents.
