The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) warned of an increasing number of rogue motorists who used fake registration numbers to evade accountability after breaking the law.

According to the authority, motorists endangered the lives of pedestrians and other drivers on the roads because they break traffic laws and even cause road accidents.

To mitigate such occurrences, the authority noted that it allowed for free verification of the vehicle details on the NTSA app, downloadable from Google Play Store.

Issuing further details, NTSA noted that the verification required a vehicle's number plate.

The information available for free on the app include the matatu Sacco details, motor vehicle inspection status, and the vehicle’s licensed route.

Additionally, Kenyans can verify details of road service licence status, and night travel licence.

How to verify

After launching the NTSA app on your phone, a dropdown list will appear including the driving licence verification, Matatu sacco details, motor vehicle inspection status, road service licence status, night travel licence status, and PSV badge verification.

In addition, the list includes Interim DL verification, Bodaboda certificate verification and Instruction License.

To verify the registered name of the Sacco, select the Matatu Sacco details option on the dropdown.

Proceed to enter the name of the Sacco and click Verify.

A pop-up will appear notifying you if the name is Valid or not.

If valid, the registration number and the full name of the matatu Sacco will appear. If not, the pop-up will notify you that the Sacco is not registered.

To verify the inspection status, select the motor vehicle inspection status on the drop-down menu.

Enter the number plate of the vehicle whose details you are looking for and click verify.

A pop-up will appear with details of the inspection number, the expiry date of the inspection, the centre where the vehicle was registered, and the inspection type.

However, if the vehicle is not registered the pop-up will detail that the registration is not valid.

The same process applies to road service licence status and night travel licence status.

To access details for PSV badge verification, interim driving licence verification, bodaboda cert verification, and instructor license, one requires to input their ID number.

A pop-up will appear with the details required and notify the user if they are not registered under the Authority.

On Thursday, March 23, NTSA encouraged parents and guardians to verify information about the vehicles used to transport their children to and from school to ensure their safety.

“Children are vulnerable road users due to their size and limitations in vision and hearing, it is therefore prudent for all road users to prioritize their safety.

“We urge parents to use safe modes of transport to ferry children to and from school. Parents can verify this through the free NTSA mobile app by capturing the vehicle's registration number,” the authority cautioned.
