Humphrey Waswa, Safety and Security Manager at East Africa Spectre Limited, a gas plant owned by Azimio leader Raila Odinga, on Monday, March 27, claimed that security officers took 30 minutes to repulse an attack on the company.
Addressing the media, Waswa indicated that a private security firm on standby swung into action, countering the attackers hurling stones at the company along Mombasa Road.
The company's perimeter walls also made it harder for the attackers to get past the perimeter wall. Over 100 workers at the firm were also alerted on the situation, making it easy for security guards to provide safety.
"It took like 30 minutes,we have the police around who responded very well and our staff who were alert," Waswa stated.
However, Waswa claimed that the attack was planned and commanded by unknown individuals using Land Cruisers.
According to the security officer, the CCTV camera captured the vehicle and rowdy youths who pelted the building with stones, destroying property of unknown value.
The safety and security manager further alleged that the attackers targeted the company's managing director's office on the building's second floor.
"They were being supported by four unmarked vehicles. We suspect that their target was our managing director because her office is the one that has been damaged so much," Waswa stated.
Workers were unhurt during the attack, and the managing director was absent. He confirmed that investigations had been launched following the attack.
Raila condemned the attack terming it an act of cowardice.
"Today, those cowards sent goons to Uhuru's farm in Ruiru and other people to East Africa Spectre. Those acts are criminal and foolish," Raila stated during Azimio's anti-government protests.
He accused some government officials of attacking his company and Northlands City, associated with former President Uhuru Kenyatta. At Northlands, suspected goons invaded the property and looted sheep of unknown value. Later fire broke out at the farm, adding more mystery to the incident.
By the time of this publication, National Police Service had not issued a statement regarding the attack on Spectre Limited and Northlands.
However, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki maintained that the government was keen on protecting the country and property.
"We must protect our Country from sliding into irretrievable anarchy," Kindiki stated.
Meanwhile, Nairobi senator and Raila's ally, Edwin Sifuna, underlined that the opposition would not retaliate by targeting private property, but would continue protesting and picketing as dictated by the Constitution.
"We have given unequivocal instructions to our supporters that no private business or property is to be touched," he stated.
