Sylvia Onyango, a mother to David Ochieng who was reported to have died after the Azimio protests on March 20, appealed for help to settle hospital bills and bury her son.

According to Sylvia, she received reports of the death of her son eight days later from another woman who had identified him in the hospital.

She detailed, on Sunday, April 2, that she had been looking for her son for days before some young men started telling residents that they had been with Ochieng in Kibera during the protest.

Further, she stated that the young men claimed that her son was not able to run fast enough during the protests and was arrested by a police officer who hit him leaving him on the ground.

“Some young men started saying days later that they were with my son during the protests but because he was not able to run fast enough, he was caught by one of the police officers.

“They were scared of approaching me to tell me the truth but I hear reports that they claimed that officer hit my son with a rungu and he did not get up from the ground after that,” Sylvia narrated.

She looked for her son for several days at different hospitals, police stations and mortuaries before a lady called her to let her know that she had identified her son at Mbagathi hospital in critical condition.

“A certain woman called me to tell me that she saw him at Mbagathi hospital and he was naked and very sick.

"I asked his sister to go to Mbagathi and confirm the reports while I went back to the city mortuary,” she disclosed.

Ochieng’s body had been at Mbagathi hospital for 10 days because her mother could not secure funds to transport his body home for burial.

She added that she was not able to raise an additional Ksh20,000 for postmortem to determine the cause of death of her son.

“My son is already dead. I don't have money for the postmortem. All I am focusing on now is to get money to transport his body home for a proper burial,” she stated
