One person died as several students were injured after two school buses collided along the Kagio-Baricho road in Kirinyaga County on Wednesday Morning, April 5.

Residents near the accident scene rushed to rescue victims in the two vehicles, with police officers arriving to assess the situation.

Additionally, welders were at the scene to cut through parts of the car to rescue the victims.

From the photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the buses collided on the side causing the windows to shatter and the front parts damaged.

Emergency service providers rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, where first aid was administered. 

The dead body was ferried to a nearby morgue. Reports alleged that the deceased was the manager of one of the schools. 

According to one of the residents, they heard noises, and 10 minutes later, the buses collided, prompting them to rush to the accident scene.

"We rushed and rescued the students from the bus and took those who were severely injured to the hospital," the resident stated.

"At around 6 am in the morning, we came here trying to save the students. The two buses were taking the students to school," another resident recounted.

The cause of accident was yet to be ascertained by the time of publish this article. 

According to the latest data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 1,072 fatalities were reported between January and March 2023.

Following a recent tragic accident involving the Pwani University bus, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, on Monday, April 3, launched a crackdown on all unroadworthy vehicles across the country.

"All vehicles will be inspected and each motorist will be issued with an inspection certificate to confirm that one has been servicing the vehicle, have good brakes, and so forth," Murkomen announced, further warning that recklessness will not be tolerated.
