CCTV footage of a nearby shop in Migori Town on Saturday morning, April 8, captured the speeding lorry before it rammed into boda boda riders at the stage.

In the few seconds of video shared by Sikika Road Safety, residents are seen conducting their business as usual before the lorry disrupted normalcy.

The lorry then passed between a lorry and a matatu heading straight for the riders, after it avoided ramming into a lorry from behind.

A boda boda rider and a pedestrian were seemingly the first to be hit, although a vehicle blocked the CCTV from capturing the grisly moment.

The grisly incident saw the locals scamper for safety before rescuing the victims while others looted rice from the fallen lorry.

It was reported that the lorry brakes failed and the driver lost control, forcing him to start hooting as a warning.

Migori Governor George Mbogo confirmed the incident noting that several casualties had been reported while others were seriously injured.

"I take this chance to convey my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in this tragedy and wish a quick recovery to all those who sustained injuries," he stated.

He noted that the rescue team was in the area, transferring the victims to the hospital for medical assistance.

The governor went on to urge the police to undertake an investigation to ascertain and report the real cause of the tragic accident.

"A report will enable us to take an initiative that can avoid such from recurring. I will give further information as it becomes available," he added.

Following the accident, locals and Kenyans called upon the relevant authorities to intervene and reduce the number of fatalities on the road.

Several leaders sent condolence messages led by Azimio party leader Raila Odinga who stated," May God grant you all fortitude to get through this difficult moment."

A report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) released on April 4, indicated that 1,072 fatalities related to road accidents were recorded between January and March 2023.
