Several passengers were feared dead while others sustained injuries after a bus they were travelling in overturned along the Thika-Garissa Highway on Wednesday, April 12.

Witnesses claimed that the bus belonging to Rayan Coach Company was speeding while ferrying passengers bound for Garissa from Nairobi.

The emergency evacuation team arrived at the scene and rushed casualties to Thika Level 5 hospital for treatment.

One half of the bus' front windscreen was completely damaged as well as its back glass.

Members of the public watched in shock as others helped to rescue the victims and transfer them to the nearby hospitals.

Additionally, witnesses stated that officers from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) were leading in the coordination of the rescue.

They noted that the bus had left Nairobi at 11:00 AM and was headed for Garissa.

It was, however, not clear how many individuals lost their lives or sustained injuries in the incident by the time of publishing.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) details that 1,072 lives were lost in road accidents between January and March 2023, with the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway being the most dangerous road in the country.

Following rampant accidents, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced a crackdown on all unroadworthy vehicles to reduce the fatalities.

in addition, he announced measures to reduce the casualties, including the installation of cameras on highways, improved car inspection and civic education to Kenyans on road safety.

"I directed NTSA to heighten surveillance to ensure unroadworthy vehicles are not allowed on our roads," the CS declared.
