Members of the public intervened and stopped two police officers from escaping after they were accused of knocking down a man along Kipande Road, in Nairobi on Thursday, April 20.

The policemen were accused of using the wrong side of the road when the misfortune occurred.

In videos shared by eyewitnesses, a middle-aged man was lying down on the road writhing in pain.

An uproar ensued after a crowd turned against the law enforcement officers, criticising them for breaking traffic laws.

In the clash, one of the witnesses tried to stop the officer from reversing and driving away from the scene.

Others advised the officers to park the car and address the issue.

“This police car is on the wrong side. They were avoiding the jam, and in the end, he knocked down a person,” an eyewitness claimed.

As the scuffle with the crowd escalated, the officers rushed the injured man to the hospital in fear for their lives.

Earlier in the week, Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen addressed the growing concern about rising road mishaps.

Murkomen, on Wednesday, April 19, directed unroadworthy vehicles to be removed from the roads immediately, after six students perished along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The CS further requested the members of the public to help restore order by reporting road users who break traffic laws.

"Help us restore safety on our roads by reporting incidences of traffic violations through the National Police Service hotline 911," commented Murkomen.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), indicates that 1,072 lives were lost to road mishaps between January and March 2023.

362 were pedestrians, 302 motorcyclists, 184 passengers, 101 pillion passengers, 104 drivers, and 19 were pedal cyclists.
