The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Sunday, April 30, revealed that half of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers already deployed countrywide were yet to receive their salaries.

In a statement, the Commission confirmed that only 50 per cent of its workforce of 35,550 teachers who were posted to different schools in February and March 2023 had received their salaries in full.

Giving reason for the delay, TSC stated that some of the teachers reported to their respective institutions later leading to a delay in the processing of their salaries.

“As is a procedure, the recruits are given 30 days within which to report to their various stations, which leads to some commencing their work later than others.

“This sometimes causes delays in the processing of their salaries. So far, the Commission has processed over 50 per cent of the salaries of the newly employed teachers,” TSC stated.

The Commission also directed teachers who had been paid to confirm receipt of their salaries through their respective banks.

Further, TSC issued an apology for the delay assuring the teachers that they would get their salaries by May 2023.

“We apologise for any delays that may have been occasioned by late reporting of teachers to their stations or delayed submission of requisite documents.

“All efforts are being made to affect all the salaries in May 2023,” TSC noted.

In addition, TSC directed the teachers to contact the Director of Human Resource Management and Development in case of any other questions.

On April 23, the inaugural cohort of Junior Secondary School (JSS) tutors highlighted a crisis in the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) because of the delayed salaries.

Education stakeholders called on the Ministry of Education to intervene in the situation as the first term of the premier CBC class came to an end.

The crisis followed an announcement by the Ministry of Education on April 14, 2023, indicating that it had released Free Secondary Education (FSE) funds for JSS.
