Police officers on Sunday, April 30, intercepted four armed suspects dawned in military uniform along the Garissa Highway.
In a statement by the National Police Service, a contingent from the Border Police Unit and Garissa Police Station responded swiftly to a tip-off from members of the public.
They set up a roadblock where they waved down the vehicle used by the suspected thugs who were armed to the teeth.
"A white Toyota Probox was intercepted at Nuno area with four occupants, all donning military gear. Each of them has an ak47 rifle," the statement read in part.
In addition, the officers recovered 19 rifle magazines with 500 rounds of ammunition, and a balaclava, a mask often used by thugs to conceal their faces.
The four men were also found in possession of five mobile phones, a ballistic helmet, a knife, and a machete concealed under a mattress.
Officers ferried the suspects to an unnamed police station for questioning pending their arraignment before a court of law.
"Detectives are yet to establish the mission of the four suspects who were armed with the deadly arsenal and are currently grilling them at a highly guarded location," the statement read in part.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) lauded the swift reaction by the police officers which prevented a potentially huge crime.
"DCI commends the cops based at Modika as the weapons would have had a devastating effect had they been used against innocent civilians.," the agency wrote.
Meanwhile, they expressed gratitude to the members of the public for raising concerns about the four suspects with the police.
The police are looking for the owner of the vehicle registered under plate number KDL ***A.
