Inside Anthony Blinken's Call to Ruto After Taking Over Regional Role

President William Ruto and US State Secretary Antony J. Blinken, on Monday, May 1, agreed on an approach to resolve the Sudan crisis after America took over the mediation. 

Ruto stated that he was happy with how the US helped negotiate a ceasefire in Sudan. 

“Kenya will work closely with UN agencies and other organisations to coordinate, scale up and deliver humanitarian assistance to the people of Sudan,” Ruto stated.

Blinken appreciated President Ruto's support of the United States' collective international action to end fighting in Sudan.

At the same time, Blinken was pleased with President Ruto's leadership and effort in developing an urgent plan for restoring peace in Sudan.

The two leaders discussed the importance of pressing the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to uphold the current ceasefire and embrace negotiations to end the conflict.

Earlier in the day, President Ruto held talks with UN agencies and other humanitarian organisations on delivering food, water, and medicine to the people in Sudan.

President Ruto, on Monday, May 1, met with former Sudan Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok to discuss the country's situation. 

“Our focus is to also work with civilian leaders and the population to make a contribution to the resolution of the conflict," Ruto noted. 

Ruto confirmed that he was determined to ensure the transition in Sudan leads to civilian and democratic governance

World Health Organization report on April 21, 2023, revealed that 413 people were killed and 3,551 injured in Sudan since the war broke out.

The WHO report further showed 11 attacks on health facilities in Sudan during the war.

UNICEF spokesperson James Elder noted that at least 9 children were killed and more than 50 injured.
