The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), on Friday, May 5, refuted reports that it raised the Smart Driving License (DL) price from Ksh3,050 to Ksh6,000.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a senior NTSA communication officer stated that the Smart DL prices were not revised.
“Smart DL remains Ksh3,050,” the communications specialist stated.
Some motorists had claimed that the convenience fee was reviewed upwards from Ksh50 to Ksh3,000.
Others lamented that the transport regulator had increased the prices quietly since they were unaware of the changes.
Coming at a time, the government proposed tax increments, motorists claimed that the alleged hike was a new avenue for taxation.
According to the Finance Bill 2023, the government proposed income taxes on digital assets such as cryptocurrencies and excise taxes on wigs, human hair, and false beards.
However, NTSA maintained that no changes to the Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS) were effected.
On March 27, 2023, NTSA updated the application process for acquiring smart driving licenses.
It also stated that the application and issuance of driving licences from its online portal would take five working days only.
NTSA launched the smart DL in 2017. The aim was to discontinue the issuance of the old driving license booklet progressively.
The agency recently warned motorists against falling for unscrupulous agents purporting to carry out activities on its behalf. On Tuesday, March 2, the road authority cautioned Kenyan motorists over a fake Twitter account scamming unsuspecting customers.
It also advocated against paying for its charges via pay bill numbers, insisting that all payments are made online.
