Meet Orengo's Deputy, PhD Holder Who Quit High-Flying Job to Join Politics

Police officers in Siaya on Saturday, May 13 shot in the air to disperse supporters of Governor James Orengo, and his deputy William Oduol. 

The two leaders who had been at loggerheads for months were attending a burial within the county, when they shared a podium before hell broke loose.

Oduol had in March 2023, cried foul over alleged mistreatment by his boss, Senior Counsel James Orengo.

William Oduol released a dossier to the county assembly on April, 14, detailing how junior county staff were allegedly being used by top officers at the county treasury to siphon millions of taxpayers' money.

In his dossier, Oduol claimed that Ksh17 million was stolen during their swearing-in ceremony and he wanted the assembly to summon top leadership of the county treasury to give more details on the same.

Who is William Oduol? 

Before Joining politics, Oduol held management positions in different companies, having gained the experience both locally and internationally. 

Apart from being a deputy governor, William Oduol is the current CEO of Westcon in Pan Emerging Africa. 

Oduol vied for the Siaya County gubernatorial seat in 2013 General Election but lost to Cornel Rasanga who was declared winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

He has extensive experience of the Global and African continent and that of management of People, vendors and partners, coupled with a solid operational finance, marketing and sales background.

Oduol’s prior employers include Coca-Cola Africa where he was field marketing manager, Microsoft – head of channel business and OEM Lead, Mustek East Africa – General Manager and a sales manager at Safaricom.

He was the President and CEO, Gorilla Corporation, MEA from June 2020 to September 2021. 

From July 2016 to June 2020, William Oduol was a state officer and sat on the Board of Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency, a parastatal under the Ministry of Water and Sanitation.  

He was Group CEO, Westcon Comstor Africa from December 2008 to December 2015.

The deputy governor was head of channel business and OEM Lead at Microsoft Corporation, a fulltime job from 2005 to 2008·

Oduol joined Westcon Africa in December 2008 from Microsoft where he was head of channel business and OEM Lead for East and Southern Africa.

He was also founding chairman of Denge Community Outreach Programme (DECOP), a CBO that deals in sustainable livelihoods in Siaya.

He graduated from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) with a PHD in leadership and governance in 2022.

In 2005, he graduated with an MBA in strategic management from United States International University- Africa (USIU- Africa).

Between the year 2000 to 2003 he studied and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in International Business Administration from USIU - Africa. 

On the other hand, he studied and attained CPA (K), CPS (K) Accounting from Strathmore University, between 1995 to 1999.

He was registered with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK). 

In the run up to the 2022 elections, Senator James Orengo settled on the 50-year-old from Alego Usonga as his running mate. 

The two however, fell out immediately after election. Already, three activists sued Orengo for allegedly frustrating his deputy, less than a year since they were sworn into office.
