Eliud Wekesa popularly known as Yesu wa Tongaren on Tuesday, May 16, received a kind gesture from a senior police officer who had previously led a contingent that arrested him.
Yesu wa Tongaren who was addressing the media at the precincts of Bungoma Law Courts thanked Bungoma Police Commander Francis Kooli for coming to his aid when he was in custody.
The New Jerusalem Preacher told journalists that Kooli paid Ksh4,000 to offset his son's rent which was due at the beginning of May 2023.
"My son who lives in Kiambu had been locked out due to failure to pay his rent in time," Yesu wa Tongaren revealed as he expressed his gratitude.
According to Yesu wa Tongaren, Kooli took action when he heard that the preacher's son was sleeping in the cold after being locked out.
"I would like to thank Bungoma Police Commander Francis Kooli who gave out his hard-earned Ksh4,000 and cleared my son's rent," Yesu wa Tongaren revealed.
The preacher also pleaded with journalists who were curiously following proceeding at Bungoma Law Courts to buy him a gas cooker since he desired to upgrade his life.
"You journalists have been to my home, and you know how it is. I'm not living a comfortable life, and any little contribution towards buying cooking gas will be highly appreciated," Ruto stated.
Further, Yesu wa Tongaren asked well-wishers to help his daughter who was facing financial challenges while taking her college studies.
"I'm asking people, especially, you journalists who normally come to my home to assist my daughter who lacks school fees and mobile phone for basic communication with me while she is away," Yesu wa Tongaren stated.
Yesu wa Tongaren addressed the media after being released by Bungoma Principal Magistrate Tom Olando after the prosecution told the Court that investigators could not link the preacher to any wrongdoing.
The New Jerusalem Church leader appeared before the Bungoma Law Courts, where the 2022 presidential candidate, Prof. George Wajackoyah, represented him.
Yesu wa Tongaren was first arrested on May 10, 2023, and he had been in police custody since then.
