The Olkaria geothermal spa hot water pool in Naivasha is the leading producer of geothermal power in Africa and among the top 10 producers in the world.

The project which was officiated and launched by former President Uhuru Kenyatta continues to gain popularity among Kenyans and foreigners not just for power production but for its recreational provisions.

For many who want to explore the outdoors, the spa is a relaxing and healing resource for them.

It has been likened to the blue lagoon, a geothermal spa in Iceland charging Ksh1.1 million per person for one hour for a retreat experience.

Just like the blue lagoon, the Olkaria geothermal spa contains a high content of silica that benefits the skin that is proven to improve skin affected by eczema and prevents premature ageing.

According to the blue lagoon website, Silca is also vital for healthy joints, skin, nails, teeth and bones.

However, unlike the blue lagoon, the Olkaria geothermal spa charges an entry fee of Ksh400 for adults and Ksh100 for children.

Unfortunately, the many herbal facial creams and mountaintop views you get at the blue lagoon are not available at the Olkaria Spa. Regardless, one can still enjoy the soothing and relaxing experience and even get out of the pool with better skin.

The Olkaria geothermal spa is a Ksh600 million project that was launched by former president Uhuru Kenyatta to supply most of the country’s energy needs.

Because of its success and international ranking, it had become a benchmark for many countries including Canada.

In a meeting with the Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary(CS) Davis Chirchir on Wednesday, May 17, the Canadian High Commissioner to Kenya Christopher Thornley requested to be hosted in the geothermal sites after he was impressed by Kenya’s success in the production of power.

In a statement shared by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, the CS also invited the high commissioner to the African Energy Week that was scheduled to take place in Nairobi.

“He requested to be hosted in our geothermal power generation sites as a learning experience of the success Kenya has made in Geothermal Power Generation to benchmark the site as a learning experience of the success Kenya has made in Geothermal Power Generation,” the statement read in part.
