Meta Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg on Monday, May 22, announced a new edit feature on WhatsApp allowing users to modify a message within 15 minutes of sending the message.

In a statement, Zuckerberg noted that the edited messages will have an edited tag beside the time stamp to mark the change.

The application will, however, not keep the correction history. This means that other users will not be able to see the previous versions of the edited messages.

He noted that the new feature would give more control to a user in editing their chats.

Further, he guaranteed that the personal messages as well as media and calls would still be protected by an end-to-end encryption.

"For the moments when you make a mistake, or simply change your mind, you can now edit your sent messages. From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we’re excited to bring you more control over your chats," the statement read in part.

How it Works

If a user wants to edit a message, he or she is instructed to long-press on the sent message and choose edit from the menu.
As stated earlier, the feature only lasts for fifteen minutes.

According to Zuckerberg, Meta already rolled out the feature to users globally and will be available to all Android and iOS users in the coming weeks.

Meta has been releasing new features in a bid to offer cutting-edge services and features to their users. Recently, Zuckerberg announced a new feature on WhatsApp allowing users to lock and hide conversations.

The new feature removed a chat thread from the application's regular feed and placed it in a new folder that can only be opened through either a password or biometric authentication.

He assured users that the Chat Lock feature would protect intimate conversations as notifications from the chats were hidden.

"New locked chats in WhatsApp make your conversations more private. They're hidden in a password-protected folder and notifications won't show sender or message content," the statement read in part.
