Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, on Tuesday, May 23, hosted foreign diplomats, including US Ambassador Meg Whitman, at his office in Nairobi.

In a statement by the former Head of State, it was noted that the delegation also consisted of Valentin Zellweger from Switzerland and the European Union Deputy Managing Director Africa Bernard Quintin, among others.

The meeting was a courtesy call with several issues discussed, including the role of Uhuru as a regional peace ambassador.

His efforts in advocating for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) - where Uhuru is a peace facilitator, dominated the talks. The Azimio chair issued a progress report on the situation, bringing the diplomats to speed.

However, it was not indicated whether the group discussed the political situation in the country, with the meeting coming a day after the former President hosted the Jubilee National Delegates Convention (NDC).

"The representatives and the delegation deliberated on the current operational situation, progress made, and their support for the ongoing political process of finding lasting peace and stability in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

"The Facilitator also received a report from his technical advisors following a meeting with the East African Community Monitoring & Verification Mechanism earlier," read the statement in part.

Uhuru's meeting with the diplomats came hours after he took on the Kenya Kwanza administration led by President William Ruto over their alleged attempt to take over the former ruling party and force him to retire.

According to the Azimio chairman, he had planned to exit the political stage following the election of Ruto. However, he changed his mind after recent developments of leadership wrangles in his party.

"Others decided that it would be intimidation and force and today I tell them to get someone to intimidate and not Uhuru Kenyatta,"  he stated

Notably, Uhuru's move to host the NDC saw him come under sharp criticism, with several Kenya Kwanza politicians suggesting that he be recalled from his peace ambassador role over attacks on the Ruto administration.

"He is even an embarrassment in the region. The other Presidents are wondering how qualified he is to preside over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) peace talks when he is very busy funding trouble at home,"  Tourism Cabinet Administrative Secretary(CAS) Wilson Sossion stated then.

However, Uhuru reiterated that he would not retire as he was out to defend his party. The former president, nonetheless, is wrestling with retaining his party from the Kanini Kega-led faction backed by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.
