Two people aboard a light aircraft were, on Friday, June 8, rushed to a hospital after an emergency landing at the Kisumu International Airport.
In a statement by the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA), the pilot of the Kisumu-bound aircraft was among those rushed to hospital for first aid treatment.
KAA detailed that the incident, which occurred minutes after 10 pm, started after the plane's landing gear failed.
"We would like to confirm that a light aircraft has had an emergency landing at Kisumu International Airport.
"Both occupants are safe and have been rushed to hospital for precautionary medical assessment," read the statement in part.
Preliminary reports indicate that the plane - used for training pilots, developed mechanical issues minutes before landing.
Onlookers reported that the aircraft hovered around the airport for hours as the pilot and operators strategised to prevent the plane from crashing.
In the meantime, the airport's management and emergency responders, at the scene, feared that the plane would have exploded upon landing.
Luckily, when landing, the fuel was exhausted, thus preventing a catastrophe.
KAA released a statement after residents raised concern over the aircraft, which appeared to struggle minutes to landing.
"There is a plane that has been going round Kisumu for the last two hours, I think there is a problem. I hope those on board survive this ordeal. What’s really going on?" an eyewitness posed.
Last week, KAA also reported an incident at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) involving a plane that crashed during a drill.
"KAA successfully conducted a full-scale emergency drill at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to enhance emergency response capabilities and preparedness," read the statement then.
