Replacing a lost certificate was an uphill task in the past, as it involved moving from various government offices with documents before approval.

Through the eCitizen, a government online portal, Kenyans can apply to replace their lost birth certificates in simple steps.

According to Civil Registration Services, to replace a lost birth certificate, one must sign up or log in to the eCitizen account.

After accessing the online portal, select the civil registration services tab, then choose 'application for child's current birth certificate.'

Proceed to select 'apply for a replacement of birth certificate' on the drop-down menu.

An applicant must then fill in the required details before uploading parents' identification cards and a copy of the lost certificate, if available, or the birth notification.

The applicant must pay the indicated fees after filling in all the details and submitting the documents.

Once the process is completed, you'll receive a message or mail on when to collect the replaced birth certificate.

A birth certificate is important as it is required during national examinations, applying for IDs and passports. Some recruiters also demand birth certificates before granting employment offers.

To expedite the processes involved, Immigration and Citizen Services Principal Secretary (PS) Julius Bitok, on Friday, May 5, announced that Kenyans would receive birth certificates on the same day of application.

"I have directed that those seeking birth certificates should come in the morning, and by evening, they have the certificate ready.

"There will be no waiting longer," the PS assured applicants.
