Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime, through the county water head, disbanded the entire water board two weeks after receiving the directive from Senators.

The board was disbanded over claims of irregular recruitment and the wrangles within the board.

Following the disbandment, the vacancies were advertised, and preparations for interviews were put in motion.

"We have already advertised three positions and other advertisements are underway," a county official told the press.

"We are introducing a new billing process to avoid the issues in the past. We are piloting smart meters in some homes before we roll them out across the county," another official added, hinting at a water crisis within the county.

Following a meeting with the Senate Committee on County Public Investments and Special Funds on May 30, the governor was given a 60-day ultimatum to resolve the highlighted issues.

According to the committee, the managerial wrangles in the board were disadvantageous to the local residents.

They, therefore, urged the county boss to take up an active role in the management of the water company to ensure the operations ran smoothly.

Led by Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Mwadime was directed to hire a new Managing Director and introduce performance contracting for all employees.

Other reforms to ensure the water situation in Taita Taveta was resolved included taking an inventory of all company assets to boost the efficiency of operations.

On the other hand, the Senate Committee tasked the county with putting in place comprehensive measures to reduce non-water revenue to below 25 per cent.

Within 60 days, the county government was expected to retrieve the irregular payments made to the board members.

The water company was required to adhere to all the relevant guidelines put in place as part of the restructuring process.
