A 25-year-old was arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India, for trying to bypass the security team with contraband worth Ksh222 million.

A senior customs official intimated to the press on Friday, June 16, that the female was intercepted at the airport shortly after touchdown.

She was frisked by the airport officials and sniffer dogs who stumbled upon the cocaine dissolved into two whisky bottles. The lady was arrested while the contraband was seized.

"These two bottles were handed over to her at a Nairobi airport. She was supposed to hand them over to a person in Delhi," the official stated.

The passenger was taken into custody and is being held for 14 days to pave the way for investigations. The majority of Kenyans wondered how the woman bypassed the security officials at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

In a separate incident, another Kenyan was nabbed on May 3, 2023, for supplying cocaine worth Ksh83 million to a Nigerian businessman.

Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) zonal director for Mumbai, Amit Ghawate, noted that the Kenyan was intercepted at night for hiding a non-metallic object in his luggage. The detectives conducted a search and found two packets of cocaine hidden at the bottom of his bag.

On June 30, 2022, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Customs officials revealed that the most commonly intercepted items at JKIA were drones and skin-lightening products.

The officials also pointed out that shisha, pharmaceutical products, sex toys, guns and bulletproof vests made the list.

“The law stipulates all prohibited and restricted goods, our part is to enforce it at the entry point to ensure the safety of Kenyans,” the statement from KRA read in part.

The officials advised Kenyans seeking to import various products to familiarise themselves with the existing guidelines to avoid run-ins with the law.
