A speeding Probox ferrying Miraa burst into flames on Wednesday, July 5, after hitting an electric pole in Subukia, Nakuru County.

The vehicle was hurrying back after delivering goods before it lost control and hit the pole.

Two people, who were selling roasted maize along the road, were injured and rushed to the hospital after the incident.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the locals watched from afar as the vehicle burnt down next to the electric pole.

"These vehicles are driving too fast. The driver hit the pole throwing him out of the car before he fled. I heard the noise from far," one resident stated.

"When will officials from Kenya Power come to fix this pole?" wondered another hinting that the pole had impeded transport along the road for a while.

Additionally, firefighters were called to put out the fire as other emergency personnel, including traffic marshals, responded to the incident.

Reacting to the incident, Kenyans blamed the government for failing to give a way forward in which the perishable crop will be transported effectively to avoid the numerous accidents.

"Air haulage should be implemented to bring these accidents to an end. These vehicles are driven at neck-breaking speed," one suggested.

Furthermore, they urged the Ministry of Transport to ensure speed governors are installed in all vehicles to limit the speed that often results in fatal accidents.

Data released by the National Transport and Safety(NTSA) on Thursday, June 29, revealed that the number of fatalities recorded between January and June 2023 reduced compared to a similar period in 2022.

2,124 cases were recorded in 2023 with pedestrians accounting for 729 of the fatalities while 2,261 were reported in 2022.
